Ceramic Lined Pipe & Elbows
Steel pipe with an alumina sleeve cast into the bore — from DN50 to DN600, with a smooth bore and full protection at the bends.
Pipework is where abrasion is most concentrated and least visible. A straight run may last years while an elbow fails in weeks, because the particles change direction there — and the wear it causes is not the failure, the leak is.
Where it is used
- Tailings and concentrate pipelines in mineral processing
- Ash and slag slurry lines in power stations
- Lime, gypsum and chemical slurry dosing lines in water treatment
- Pneumatic conveying of cement, fly ash, alumina and other powders
- Grit and screenings transport in municipal works
Construction
A steel outer pipe carries the pressure and the bending load. Inside it, an alumina sleeve — cast in place with a high-strength cementitious or resin backfill — provides the wear surface. The bore is smooth, so there are no ledges where solids can settle, and the ceramic does not deform the way rubber does under a hot slurry.
Available sizes
| Nominal bore | Lining thickness | Outer pipe | Standard lengths |
|---|---|---|---|
| DN50 – DN80 | 6 – 10 mm | steel, seam welded | 1, 2, 3 m |
| DN100 – DN150 | 10 – 15 mm | steel, seam welded | 1, 2, 3, 6 m |
| DN200 – DN300 | 15 – 20 mm | steel, seam welded | 1, 2, 3, 6 m |
| DN350 – DN450 | 20 – 25 mm | steel, seam welded | 2, 3, 6 m |
| DN500 – DN600 | 25 – 30 mm | steel, seam welded | 2, 3, 6 m |
Elbows are supplied with a long radius as standard, because a long radius reduces the impingement angle and therefore the wear rate. Short-radius and mitered elbows are available where space is restricted, but they wear faster.
Fittings
- Straight lengths, with plain, flanged or grooved ends as required
- Elbows at 45°, 90° and other angles, long radius or as specified
- Tees, laterals, reducers, expansion pieces and Y-branches
- Custom spools and transition pieces fabricated to site dimensions
Quality and testing
- Bore inspected and recorded before backfilling
- Hydrostatic test at 1.5 × design pressure before dispatch
- Lining thickness verified by measurement at each end
- Grade AL-95 or AL-99 with batch test report
- Packing with end caps; lifting points marked on the larger sizes
Wear rate rises roughly with the cube of the flow velocity. Where a line is wearing out too fast, reducing the velocity or increasing the bend radius often works better than specifying a harder material.
