Alumina Ceramic Lining Tiles
Alumina mosaic and hexagonal tiles, 10–50 mm thick, with weld-in studs, bolt plates or epoxy backing for chutes, hoppers and bins.
The workhorse of abrasive wear protection. Tiles are pressed to a nominal size and thickness, fired, and then fixed to a steel shell — and the fixing method you choose matters as much as the grade.
Where it is used
- Transfer chutes and discharge chutes in mines, quarries and cement plants
- Hoppers, bins and silos handling ore, clinker, coal, coke and aggregate
- Cyclone separators, dust collectors and classifier cones
- Skip and bucket linings, truck bed liners for abrasive loads
- Fan housings, duct bends and any surface where particles arrive at speed
Fixings
| Type | Description | Use when |
|---|---|---|
| Weld-in studded | Steel studs cast or bonded into the tile back, welded to the shell | Thickness over 20 mm, temperature over 150 °C, high impact |
| Bolt-on plate | Tile bonded to a steel plate which is bolted to the structure | Replaceable panels, access doors, retrofit without welding |
| Adhesive backed | Tile bonded directly with a two-part epoxy | Thin tiles, complex geometry, temperature below 100 °C |
| Interlocking / keyed | Tiles with a mechanical key between neighbours | Where tile-to-tile retention adds security |
Standard sizes and thicknesses
| Tile size | Thickness | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 20 × 20 mm | 3, 5, 6 mm | Small equipment, tight radii, adhesive fixing |
| 17.5 × 17.5 mm | 8, 10, 12 mm | General chute and pipe lining |
| 25 × 25 mm | 10, 15, 20 mm | Chutes, hoppers and bins |
| 50 × 50 mm | 20, 25, 30 mm | Heavy chute and hopper duty |
| Hexagonal 12–25 mm | 6, 10, 15 mm | Complex geometry, curved surfaces |
| Custom shapes | up to 50 mm | Cut to the layout, supplied as a numbered set |
Tiles are supplied as a numbered set in the order they are laid. Cut-to-shape tiles are priced from the layout drawing, not by the square metre.
Which grade
- Impact with coarse particles → AL-95, 25–40 mm, studded
- Large low-impact area (silo, hopper) → AL-92, 12–25 mm, adhesive
- Fine abrasive particles at speed → AL-99, 10–20 mm
- Edge chipping is the failure mode → ZTA, same thickness
- Temperature above 150 °C → studded fixing regardless of grade
Stagger the bond. A running bond interrupted every second row stops particles tracking straight through a joint. Protect the entry edge. Chamfer or recess the first row, or fit a sacrificial steel lip upstream — most lining failures start at the leading edge.
