Chemical & Petrochemical
Corrosion-resistant alumina linings, nozzles, packing and components for acid, alkali and solvent duty.
In chemical plants the limiting factor is rarely hardness — it is chemistry and temperature. Alumina is attacked by only a short list of media, which is why it replaced metal and rubber in so many wet-process streams, but the specification has to account for porosity and for what happens at the joints.
How wear actually happens
- Acid slurry pumps and lines. Combined abrasion and corrosion. Rubber deforms and spalls; metal corrodes. Low-porosity AL-99 handles both.
- Reactor and vessel internals. Wear from agitators and from the solids in suspension, in a chemically aggressive environment.
- Filtration and separation. Porous ceramic media in a corrosive stream — the pore structure and the purity both matter.
- High-temperature reactors and crackers. Thermal cycling plus chemical attack, where alumina purity determines creep resistance.
- Pneumatic conveying of powders. Abrasion at bends and at the point of injection, in equipment that cannot be shut down often.
What we normally supply
- AL-99 tiles and bricks, low porosity, for vessel and duct linings
- AL-99 ceramic-lined pipe, elbows and fittings
- AL-99.7 crucibles, tubes, thermocouple sheaths and reactor furniture
- Porous ceramic discs, plates and tubes for filtration and gas distribution
- AL-99 grinding media where product contamination must stay below a specified level
- Ceramic nozzles and tubes for injection, spraying and quench systems
Typical grade and thickness
| Application | Grade | Thickness / size | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acid slurry line | AL-99 | 12–20 mm | Porosity ≤ 0.2%; consider gaskets at flanges. |
| Reactor internal | AL-99 | by drawing | Check chemical compatibility at the operating temperature. |
| Filtration medium | AL-92 / 99 | 1–200 µm pore | Pore size and flux determine the choice more than grade. |
| Thermocouple sheath | AL-99.7 | closed end | Thermal shock resistance is the limiting property. |
| Injection nozzle | AL-99 | Ø1.5–60 mm | Frequently replaced — consider a quick-release housing. |
