Alumina Cylpebs
Cylindrical alumina grinding media with higher surface contact than balls — less peening, better performance on flaky or soft materials.
A cylpeb is a short cylinder with rounded ends. Compared with a ball of similar mass it presents more contact area per unit of mass to the mill charge, which changes both the grind and the surface condition of the product.
When to choose cylpebs over balls
- Peening is a problem. Point contact from balls can flatten or cold-work softer materials. The extended contact line of a cylpeb reduces it.
- You want more grinding surface per tonne of charge. Cylpebs give a higher packing surface area, which can improve throughput in fine grinding.
- The mill charge is limited by mass. Cylpebs typically pack a little denser for the same nominal diameter.
- The product is flaky or plate-like. Grinding with cylpebs rather than balls improves particle shape.
Sizes
| Size (Ø × length) | Grade | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Ø10 × 10 mm | AL-95 / 99 | Fine grinding, glaze preparation |
| Ø15 × 15 mm | AL-95 / 99 | Fine to medium grinding |
| Ø20 × 20 mm | AL-92 / 95 / 99 | General purpose |
| Ø25 × 25 mm | AL-92 / 95 | Medium grinding in mineral mills |
| Ø30 × 35 mm | AL-92 / 95 | Coarser feeds |
Custom sizes are available from tooling. Supplied in 25 kg bags or 1,000 kg jumbo bags; MOQ 500 kg.
What to watch
Cylpebs wear preferentially at their edges, so the wear rate is usually slightly higher than an equivalent ball. That is the trade-off for the improved product shape and the reduced peening — which is why we recommend them for specific problems rather than as a blanket replacement for balls.
