Alumina Lining Bricks

Thick-wall alumina bricks, mechanically keyed and curved to the shell, for mill linings, cyclone cones and heavy-duty applications.

When the lining has to be thick — 40 mm and up — thin tiles stop being practical. Bricks give you mass, a mechanical key between neighbours, and a shape that can be matched to the curvature of a mill shell or a cyclone cone.

Where bricks are the right answer

  • Ball and tube mill shells. Bricks, keyed to each other and to the shell, withstand the continuous tumbling load that would debond tiles.
  • Cyclone and separator cones. Curved bricks follow the cone taper so that the working surface is continuous.
  • Bunker and thick-wall chutes. Where 50–75 mm of ceramic is needed to give the service interval.
  • Fan and pump housings. Thick sections resisting erosion by fine particles at high velocity.

Thickness and profile

Item Range Comment
Thickness 40 – 75 mm Below 40 mm tiles are usually more economical
Plan dimensions 100 × 100 to 250 × 150 mm Set by the curvature and the laying pattern
Curvature to shell radius Each course is formed to the measured radius
Keys and grooves to drawing Tongue-and-groove or dovetail between courses
Fixing weld-in studs / bolts Adhesive is not used at this thickness
Grade AL-95 / 99 AL-92 is rarely used above 30 mm
Tolerance ± 0.5 mm as-fired Ground faces available to ± 0.1 mm for close joints

Why the curvature matters

A flat tile laid on a curved shell leaves a gap. Under load the tile rocks on its edges, the bond line fatigues, and within a few hundred hours tiles begin to come away. Forming each course to the measured shell radius removes that rocking load entirely — which is why we ask for the shell diameter, or the old lining, before quoting a mill relining.

Relining a mill?

Send the mill diameter, the old brick dimensions and the shell condition. If the shell is deformed we will say so — welding bricks onto a distorted shell is a waste of the lining.

Supply format

  • Supplied as a numbered installation set with a laying plan
  • Each course labelled with its position and the direction of lay
  • Batch test report and dimensional record with the shipment
  • Supervision and installation guidance available for large relines
